A liaison for every tradition represented, so that no member answers to somebody who does not understand what they are being asked to do.
Who serves

Clergy and lay members hold the same ranks. A priest, a doctor, a soldier and an archivist would be an unremarkable field posting.

An office is what you are permitted to do. Rank is who you answer to while you do it.

Most of the work is reading. Files, letters, parish records, shipping manifests. Now and then somebody has to go out.
WHEN A MEMBER DIES, AND WHEN ONE DOES NOT
Members die. The Order writes to the family, and the file is closed by somebody who never met them.
Now and then a member who should have died does not. These are recorded in the member's own words and the Order does not rule on what happened.
