ENOCH: THE VEIL
Etched vaulted prison: a massive pier hung with chains, a lantern on a long cord, small figures on the stair.

THE PUNISHMENT DID NOT REACH THE CHILDREN

1930s America

America in the nineteen thirties. Bad roads, cheap rooms, and nobody asking where you were born.

A B&O passenger car departing down the tracks in steam, 1942.

The Watchers

The old books say what came down and what it fathered, and on that much they were right.

They came down and taught people what they were not supposed to know, and they were dealt with for it. By then their children were already here. Those children had children, and those had more, down through a very long time to you, working a shift and paying rent and carrying something nobody has ever sat you down and explained.

THE ORDER

There are people whose job is to find you. They believe they are doing right by everybody concerned, and a good deal of the time they are, which is the part that is hard to argue with.
